Main House + ADU Residence

A Dialogue Between Old and New

In Redwood City’s historic downtown fringe, a 1930s Mediterranean-style home has been expanded and paired with a bold new upper-level ADU, creating a modern multigenerational Dual-unit compound. The lower unit hosts a young family of five, while the ADU above offers independent living for visiting grandparents or future tenants, accessed via a separate side entry.

Preserving the street-facing façade, the design engages in a deliberate dialogue between old and new. Framed portals in the ADU filter light, orchestrate views, and glow at night through translucent polycarbonate, transforming the upper volume into a vibrant beacon.

Here, the ADU is not an accessory, but an equal partner - honoring the home’s history while expanding its capacity for contemporary Bay Area living.
